PEPA is an association for eligible ex-employees of Philips companies in the UK who have reached retirement age. It was founded in 1963, and is based in the south of England. We have about 2,300 members in 23 countries around the world. Our aim is to help our members to stay in contact with ex-colleagues, to bring them news of the Philips company, and to provide information of interest to retired people.
As you may be aware from mentions on this website, and in PEPA Newsletters, the committee have decided to bring PEPA activities to a close, and wind up the Association. A number of factors have contributed to this decision: we are a “mature” organisation with little prospect of new members joining, our current numbers are in significant decline, our available funds put a finite limit on how many years we will be financially viable, and the committee aren’t getting any younger! We have agreed that PEPA will close at the end of 2025, after 62 years as a successful social organisation for UK Philips Pensioners. This planned closure means that PEPA’s related benevolent association, PEPBA, will also cease to function. Members can click on  Closure of PEPA  to read further about what this decision means.

If you change your home address, please let Membership Secretary Richard Stow know. We will only know if you tell us!
Also, if you access your PEPA Newsletters via the website, please let Richard know if you change your email address, to ensure that you receive an email alert when the final edition (Winter 2025) is published.
Richard can also help if you need a reminder of the PEPA website password.
For any of the above, please email Richard, quoting your postcode, at:

The PEPA Final Party

On 8th October, the PEPA Committee hosted a final party at Denbies Wine Estate, giving PEPA members the opportunity to meet one last time, marking the closure of the Association at the end of the year. Around 80 members were able to come, and it was a very sociable occasion. There’s a report and slideshow available via the menu on the left.

PEPA Newsletter timing
There are two PEPA Newsletters each year: a Summer edition and a Winter edition. The current edition is Summer 2025, meaning that the next (and final) one will be Winter 2025.

Impressions of an MRL/PRL Research Scientist
David Paxman has provided us with a fascinating account of his experiences, from graduation in 1958 to retirement in 1996, of life at Mullard (later Philips) Research Laboratories in Salfords, Redhill, Surrey. Apart from relating some of his research experiences, David also covers the important role of the ancillary departments, and the social aspects of life at the Laboratories. Visit the Company History section of the  Documents  page to download his story. Thank you David!

PRL Reunion 2025

On Saturday 17th May, around 60 previous employees of Philips Research Laboratories, Redhill, met at a reunion event at a local pub. This was a great opportunity for ex-colleagues to reconnect after many years. For further details and photos, please see the  News/Other News  page.

Celebration of Philips 100 Years in the UK

On the 22nd January 2025 Philips had been operating in the UK for 100 years. To mark this occasion a small celebration was organised in Philips Head Office in Farnborough, and the atrium area was filled with a large number of old Philips products and pictures from the last 100 years. A number of presentations were streamed around Philips UK. PEPA Chairman Ray Headon, and Membership Secretary Richard Stow, took part. To read more about the event, and see slide shows of over 40 photos (can you spot a Philips product you owned?), head for the  News/Philips News  page.

The new Pye exhibition “What Happened Next?”

There is a new, temporary exhibition at the Cambridge Museum of Technology, dealing with the fortunes of the Pye Group following the restructuring that took place after Philips acquired a majority shareholding in 1967. See the  News/Other News  page for more details.
